Also, students are encouraged to bring in a small water bottle to have in school.

Information:
Homework
Homework is assigned every Monday and due every Thursday. A packet of math work will be sent home Monday. As pages are assigned, students are to complete the work and turn in only the assigned work. Keep the rest of the packet at home in a safe place. Thank you for not allowing your student to ‘work ahead’. Students are to copy their assignments and weekly spelling words on Monday morning. To help the students correctly copy the assignments, we use the overhead to project the information, which looks identical to their planners. Assignments are discussed and reviewed in class. Please compare your child’s homework with the information they have written in the log. Homework is your child’s responsibility, but reminders are helpful.
Third Grade Homework Rules
1. Only homework in the child’s own handwriting will be accepted.
2. Use a pencil unless otherwise noted.
3. Neatness is enforced. Students may be required to redo assignments.
4. At times signatures are required as proof of completion or revision.
5. The teacher or another impartial individual will check homework. Students will not correct any work that does not belong to them.
6. Care will be taken to protect privacy in regard to student grades.
Correcting Assignments
When we correct an assignment in class, the students will be correcting their own paper for immediate feedback. I will instruct the students to put the number incorrect at the top of their paper. (For example 3 wrong would be marked as -3)
I will sometimes give the grade in a percentage and/or a letter grade besides the Academic Indicators of 1, 2, or 3. I will do this in order to familiarize the students with a grading scale similar to what they will encounter in Fourth grade.
Grading
The Bay City Public School’s grading policy for Third grade is the use of “Academic Indicators” in place of letter grades. The Academic Indicators are based upon a number scale of 1-3.
They may also appear on students’ daily work, quizzes, tests, projects and will be used on report cards. The Academic Indicators are as follows:
1 - This indicates that the student is meeting the expected
objective with ease and confidence. He/she can apply the
objective consistently.
2 - This indicates that the student is making progress and is
beginning to understand the objective, but needs more practice
or time to learn it well.
3 - This indicates that the student has little or no understanding of
the objective and needs constant help and extended practice.
* Individual Accommodations. This indicates that the student is
having difficulty and assignments have been adjusted.
Accelerated Reader (AR)
This is an independent reading program that supports the “20 minutes a day” National effort and gives students an opportunity to practice the skills that they are learning everyday in literature. Since reading is the backbone of all education, the importance of continual development cannot be overstated.
The AR program is computerized and tracks each student’s individual reading zone (level) and goal is determined from test data, such as, the STAR test. Students are encouraged to read books in their zone and then take a test over the book read. Students are allowed to take a test at anytime during the day as except when I am giving instruction.
This management program is another reference tool on how a child is utilizing independent reading skills. To encourage children to practice reading as much as possible.
HANDWRITING
Teaching of cursive will begin in the second marking period.
